Do Air Fryers Smell? How to Stop Air Fryer Odours for Good

Dealing with a smelly air fryer? From the new plastic smell to lingering food odours, here is why your air fryer smells and exactly how to fix it.

A common complaint from new air fryer owners is an unpleasant smell — sometimes plastic, sometimes like old cooking oil, sometimes a general mustiness. The good news is that every air fryer smell has a cause and a fix. Here is the complete guide.

The New Air Fryer Plastic Smell

Almost every new air fryer has a slight plastic or chemical smell during its first few uses. This is completely normal and not dangerous. The smell comes from protective coatings and manufacturing residues burning off during initial heating.

How to fix it:

  1. Before cooking any food, run the air fryer empty at 204°C (400°F) for 20 minutes with good ventilation (open a window or turn on the range hood)
  2. Let it cool completely
  3. Wash the basket and tray with warm soapy water
  4. Repeat if needed — most units clear the smell within 2-3 empty runs

Some people add a tablespoon of distilled white vinegar to a small oven-safe dish and run it in the air fryer during the burn-off cycle. The vinegar helps neutralise the plastic smell.

Food Odour Buildup

Over time, cooking oils, grease, and food particles accumulate inside the air fryer — not just in the basket, but on the heating element, fan, and interior walls. This residue heats up every time you cook, releasing stale food smells.

How to fix it:

  1. Clean after every use. Wash the basket and tray with warm soapy water. Wipe the interior with a damp cloth.
  2. Deep clean weekly. Flip the air fryer upside down and gently clean the heating element with a soft brush or damp cloth.
  3. Vinegar steam clean. Place a small dish with water and 2 tablespoons of vinegar in the basket. Run at 177°C (350°F) for 5 minutes. The steam loosens grease and neutralises odours.
  4. Baking soda soak. For the basket, soak in warm water with 2 tablespoons of baking soda for 30 minutes, then scrub gently.

Smoke and Burning Smells

If your air fryer smokes or smells like burning during cooking, the cause is almost always accumulated grease hitting the heating element.

How to fix it:

  • Add water to the drip tray before cooking fatty foods (bacon, sausages, fatty chicken). A few tablespoons of water catches dripping grease and prevents smoking.
  • Clean the heating element regularly. Grease buildup on the element is the number one cause of smoking.
  • Reduce temperature slightly for very fatty foods.

Fishy or Strong Food Smells

Cooking fish, garlic-heavy dishes, or strongly spiced foods can leave lingering odours.

How to fix it:

  • Lemon steam: Place lemon slices in a dish of water, run at 177°C (350°F) for 5 minutes. Citrus cuts through fish and garlic smells effectively.
  • Immediate cleaning: Wash the basket immediately after cooking fish — do not let it sit.
  • Baking soda paste: Apply to the basket, let sit for 15 minutes, then scrub and rinse.

Prevention Is Easier Than Cure

The simplest way to avoid air fryer odours is consistent, basic maintenance:

  • Wash the basket after every use (takes 2 minutes)
  • Wipe the interior weekly
  • Use parchment liners or silicone mats for messy foods
  • Add water to the drip tray when cooking fatty items
  • Ensure proper ventilation — do not push the air fryer against a wall where the rear vent is blocked

A clean air fryer does not smell. If yours does, it is telling you it needs attention. A few minutes of maintenance keeps your air fryer odour-free and your food tasting exactly as it should.
