How to Clean Your Air Fryer Properly (And Make It Last Longer)

A dirty air fryer affects taste, performance, and lifespan. Learn the right way to clean every part of your air fryer and the mistakes that can damage it.

A clean air fryer cooks better food, lasts longer, and does not fill your kitchen with smoke. Yet many people either clean it incorrectly or not often enough. Here is the definitive guide to keeping your air fryer in top condition.

Why Cleaning Matters

Beyond hygiene, a dirty air fryer directly impacts your cooking:

  • Grease buildup causes smoking. Old grease on the heating element or drip tray smokes at high temperatures, giving food an unpleasant taste and triggering smoke alarms.
  • Residue affects flavour. Yesterday's garlic salmon should not flavour today's cinnamon donuts.
  • Blocked airflow reduces performance. Grease and food particles on the heating element and fan reduce air circulation, leading to uneven cooking and longer cook times.

After Every Use: The Quick Clean

This takes 5 minutes and should become habit.

Step 1: Unplug the air fryer and let it cool for 10 minutes. Never clean it while hot.

Step 2: Remove the basket and drip tray. Empty any crumbs or food debris.

Step 3: Wash the basket and tray with warm soapy water and a soft sponge. Most baskets are dishwasher safe, but hand washing is gentler on the non-stick coating.

Step 4: Wipe the interior of the air fryer with a damp cloth. Pay attention to the bottom where grease pools.

Step 5: Dry everything completely before reassembling. Moisture left inside can cause issues.

Weekly Deep Clean

If you use your air fryer daily, do this once a week. If you use it a few times a week, fortnightly is fine.

The heating element: Flip the air fryer upside down (carefully) and check the heating element. Use a soft brush or damp cloth to gently remove any grease or food residue. Never use abrasive tools on the element.

The exterior: Wipe down the outside with a damp cloth and mild cleaner. Grease splatters land on the exterior more often than you might think.

The vent area: Use a soft brush or dry cloth to clear any buildup around the air vents at the back of the unit. Blocked vents reduce performance and can cause overheating.

Dealing With Stubborn, Baked-On Grease

For those times when a regular wash is not enough:

Method 1 — Soaking: Fill the basket with warm water and a few drops of dish soap. Let it soak for 20-30 minutes. The grease should wipe away easily with a soft sponge.

Method 2 — Baking soda paste: Mix 3 parts baking soda with 1 part water to form a paste. Apply to stubborn areas and let sit for 15 minutes. Scrub gently with a soft brush.

Method 3 — Vinegar steam: Add water and a splash of white vinegar to the basket. Run the air fryer at 149°C (300°F) for 3 minutes. The steam loosens baked-on residue. Let cool, then wipe clean.

What NOT to Do

  • Never use metal utensils or abrasive scrubbers on the basket. They damage the non-stick coating, which then flakes into your food.
  • Never submerge the main unit in water. Only the removable parts are washable.
  • Never use harsh chemical cleaners. Dish soap and baking soda are all you need.
  • Never skip the drip tray. This is where grease accumulates most and is the primary cause of smoking.
  • Avoid aerosol cooking sprays. Over time, they build up a sticky residue on the basket that is difficult to remove. Use a refillable oil spray bottle or brush oil on directly.

Making Your Air Fryer Last

Beyond cleaning, these habits extend the life of your air fryer:

  • Use parchment paper liners to reduce the amount of food touching the basket directly.
  • Do not overfill the basket — excess food pressing against the sides accelerates wear.
  • Store properly in a dry area with the basket removed to allow air circulation.
  • Replace worn baskets rather than the whole unit. Most brands sell replacement baskets.

A well-maintained air fryer should last 3-5 years of daily use. With proper care, many people get even longer. The few minutes spent cleaning after each use pays dividends in food quality, safety, and appliance longevity.
